A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Mii-dera temple at dusk, part of the Eight Views of Omi series.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his series, Eight Views of Omi. The composition depicts the Mii-dera temple complex, situated near Lake Biwa in Japan. Hiroshige employs a balanced arrangement, placing the temple buildings within a dense cluster of trees at the base of a large, imposing mountain. The foreground features open fields and scattered pine trees, which provide a sense of scale and distance against the mountainous backdrop.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of atmospheric perspective. By using subtle colour gradients and varying line weights, Hiroshige suggests the quiet, fading light of dusk. The title refers to the tolling of the temple bell, a sound traditionally associated with the end of the day in Japanese poetry and art. The muted palette, consisting of soft greens, earthy browns, and pale yellows, contributes to the tranquil mood of the scene.
Technically, the work exhibits the precise registration and carving required for high-quality ukiyo-e production. The inclusion of cartouches containing the series title and the specific scene name follows the conventions of the period. Hiroshige avoids excessive detail in the distant mountain, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the architectural elements and the natural environment. This print is a representative example of the artist's approach to capturing specific locations through a lens of poetic observation. It remains a clear record of the aesthetic priorities prevalent in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the depiction of famous sites was a primary subject for both artists and collectors.
