Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, frequently visited the Normandy coast to capture the dramatic cliffs of Etretat. This work demonstrates his characteristic application of paint, often referred to as the 'trellis' technique, where short, cross-hatched brushstrokes build up the surface of the canvas. By layering these strokes, Loiseau creates a sense of texture that mimics the rugged, weathered limestone of the cliffs and the shifting surface of the English Channel.
The composition focuses on the iconic rock formations that have drawn artists to this region for decades. Loiseau avoids the sharp, linear precision of academic painting, preferring to allow the light and atmosphere to define the forms. The palette consists of cool blues and greens for the water, contrasted against the warmer, earthy tones of the cliff face. These colours shift in response to the light, suggesting a specific time of day or atmospheric condition without relying on rigid detail.
Unlike his contemporaries who sought to dissolve form entirely into light, Loiseau maintained a structural integrity in his work. The cliffs remain solid and imposing, even as their surfaces vibrate with colour. This approach allows the viewer to perceive both the physical mass of the geological features and the transient quality of the sea air. The painting functions as a study of light and surface, capturing the specific character of the Normandy coast through a methodical, rhythmic application of pigment. It is a representative example of his later career, where his technique became increasingly refined and his observation of natural phenomena more acute.
