A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Frans Crabbe van Espleghem depicting the biblical encounter between Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus.
This engraving by the Flemish master Frans Crabbe van Espleghem depicts the biblical narrative of Queen Esther approaching King Ahasuerus. The scene captures the moment Esther enters the royal court to plead for her people, an act of great personal risk. Ahasuerus, seated upon a throne under a canopy, extends his sceptre towards her, a gesture signifying his acceptance and the sparing of her life.
Crabbe van Espleghem, active in Mechelen during the early sixteenth century, demonstrates a technical command of the burin. The composition is structured with a clear architectural backdrop, featuring rounded arches and stone masonry that frame the figures. The artist employs fine, parallel hatching to define the folds of the heavy garments and the textures of the royal robes. The figures are rendered with the characteristic elongated proportions and expressive facial features common to the Northern Renaissance style of the period.
Esther is positioned in the foreground, her posture conveying a mixture of humility and resolve. Her voluminous gown, with its elaborate sleeves and train, occupies a significant portion of the lower register, drawing the viewer's eye towards the interaction between the two central figures. Behind Esther, a group of attendants observes the encounter, their faces partially obscured, which adds a sense of depth and scale to the courtly setting. The king, depicted with a full beard and ornate crown, occupies the right side of the frame, his presence balanced by the architectural elements on the left. This work reflects the period's interest in classical architecture combined with biblical themes, a common pursuit among printmakers in the Low Countries during the early sixteenth century. The print remains a fine example of the narrative clarity and graphic precision achieved by Flemish engravers of the era.
