This etching by Anders Zorn depicts the French philosopher and writer Ernest Renan. Created in 1892, the work captures the subject in a moment of quiet contemplation within his study. Zorn, a master of the etching medium, employs a technique characterised by rapid, directional hatching to define both the form of the sitter and the surrounding environment. The heavy, dark lines of Renan's coat contrast with the lighter, more sparse strokes used to suggest the papers and architectural details of the room.
Zorn visited Renan in Paris to produce this portrait. The composition focuses on the intellectual weight of the subject, whose gaze is directed away from the viewer, towards the stacks of documents on his desk. The background remains partially suggested, allowing the viewer to focus on the psychological presence of the philosopher. Zorn's ability to convey texture and light through the economy of line is evident here, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the subtle shadows cast across the face. Artist Biography
Anders Zorn
Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.
He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.
He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
