Jules Dupré was a central figure of the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who prioritised direct observation of nature. This work, titled English View, reflects his fascination with the atmospheric conditions of the British coast. Dupré travelled to England in 1834, where he encountered the works of John Constable. The influence of the English master is evident in the treatment of the sky, which occupies the majority of the composition.

The painting features a dramatic, cloud-filled sky that dominates the horizon. Heavy, grey-toned clouds are rendered with thick, impasto brushwork, creating a sense of movement and impending weather. Below this turbulent expanse, the coastline remains relatively quiet. A small windmill is visible on the distant dunes, providing a sense of scale against the vastness of the sea. The water is painted in muted tones of blue and grey, reflecting the overcast conditions above.

Dupré utilised a palette dominated by earth tones, ochres, and slate greys. His technique involves layering paint to build texture, particularly in the clouds and the sandy foreground. Unlike the highly polished academic paintings of his contemporaries, this piece focuses on the raw, unidealised character of the coast. The composition is balanced by the diagonal line of the dunes, which leads the eye towards the horizon and the small sailing vessel on the water. This work captures a specific moment of atmospheric transition, demonstrating the artist's ability to translate the mood of a location through light and shadow.
