A 1510 engraving by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting the Electors Frederick III and John the Constant, showcasing the precise line work of the Northern Renaissance.
This engraving by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, alongside his brother and successor, John the Constant. Produced in 1510, the work captures the two figures in a formal, half-length pose, reflecting the political and social hierarchy of the early sixteenth-century German court. Cranach, who served as the court painter to the Electors of Saxony, was instrumental in documenting the likenesses of the ruling family.
The composition is defined by the precise, controlled line work characteristic of Cranach's graphic output. Frederick III is shown on the left, wearing a fur-lined mantle and a cap, his hands resting on a rosary. John the Constant stands to his right, adorned with a heavy chain, a symbol of his status. The inclusion of heraldic shields in the upper corners provides a clear identification of the subjects, while the small plaque on the table, bearing the date and the artist's signature winged serpent device, anchors the work in time and authorship.
Cranach's approach to portraiture in this medium relies on the clarity of form and the texture of materials. The rendering of the fur, the metallic weight of the chain, and the folds of the garments demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency. The figures are presented against a relatively plain background, which directs the viewer's attention to their facial features and the symbolic objects they hold. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Reformation era, where portraiture functioned as a means of projecting authority and dynastic continuity. The work remains a primary example of the intersection between political power and the printmaking traditions of the Northern Renaissance.
