An atmospheric seventeenth-century etching by Johann Ulrich Kraus, capturing a rugged, wooded stream in the Friuli region.
This etching by Johann Ulrich Kraus depicts a rugged, wooded area in the Friuli region. Kraus, a German engraver and publisher active in Augsburg, produced this work during a period when topographical and picturesque views were gaining popularity among European collectors. The composition focuses on the interplay between the dense, overhanging foliage and the turbulent water flowing over rocky outcrops in the foreground.
The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the scene. The rough bark of the trees, the smooth surfaces of the stones, and the foaming water are rendered with precise, controlled lines. This technical approach allows for a clear distinction between the shadowed depths of the forest and the brighter, more exposed sections of the stream. The inclusion of a caption at the base, 'Eine Wüsten, in Friaull gezeichnet von dem Auctore', suggests that the print was intended for a series or a collection documenting specific geographical locations.
Kraus was known for his ability to translate drawings into highly detailed prints. His work often reflects the conventions of late seventeenth-century printmaking, where the balance between natural observation and artistic stylisation was carefully maintained. The scene does not aim for strict cartographic accuracy, but rather captures the atmosphere of a remote, untamed area. The presence of the artist's name and the specific location indicates a desire to ground the image in a real-world context, providing viewers of the time with a glimpse into the geography of the Italian borderlands. This print remains a representative example of the period's interest in documenting the natural world through the medium of etching.
