A minimalist graphite study by Dutch artist Jan Roeland, reducing the form of a duck to its essential lines and a single circular eye.
Jan Roeland, a Dutch artist known for his disciplined approach to form and subject, produced this work in 2005. The title, Eend, translates from Dutch to 'duck'. This piece demonstrates his characteristic method of reducing a recognisable subject to its most basic geometric components. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction, Roeland employs a series of clean, precise lines to suggest the silhouette of the bird. The composition is contained within a rectangular frame, which acts as a boundary for the simplified shapes.
A single, shaded circle serves as the eye, providing the only point of tonal variation against the stark, white background. The remaining lines define the beak and the curvature of the head, stripping away all extraneous detail. This economy of means is typical of Roeland's practice, where he often revisited everyday objects or animals to explore their structural essence. The drawing relies on the viewer's ability to complete the image mentally, bridging the gap between the abstract lines and the biological reality of the subject.
The work reflects a broader interest in the relationship between line and space. By isolating the subject, Roeland forces a focus on the quality of the mark-making and the balance of the composition. The date, 11.05, is inscribed at the bottom, a common practice for the artist that anchors the work in a specific moment of creation. This print captures the quiet, contemplative nature of Roeland's later drawings, offering a study in restraint and clarity. It is an example of how minimal intervention can communicate a clear subject while maintaining a rigorous aesthetic standard.
