A detailed etching by Jan van Call (I) depicting a woman offering a sacrifice to the deity Priapus, set within a classical pastoral scene.
This etching by Jan van Call (I) depicts a scene rooted in classical antiquity, specifically referencing the pastoral poetry of Virgil. The composition shows a woman kneeling before a bust of Priapus, the deity of gardens and fertility, as smoke rises from a small altar. The setting is a rural environment, characterised by dense foliage, gnarled trees, and a distant view of hills and structures. The artist employs precise line work to define the textures of the bark, the billowing smoke, and the distant terrain, typical of the technical proficiency found in Dutch printmaking of the late seventeenth century.
The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print, citing Virgil's Eclogues, provides a literary framework for the visual narrative. The inscription addresses Priapus as the guardian of the poor garden, reflecting the classical tradition of incorporating mythological subjects into pastoral scenes. Van Call, a Dutch draughtsman and engraver, was known for his ability to translate complex atmospheric effects into the medium of etching. The balance between the foreground figures and the expansive background creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the quiet, ritualistic moment.
This work demonstrates the period's interest in classical themes, often used to display technical skill and humanist learning. The contrast between the dark, detailed foreground and the lighter, more open background is a hallmark of the era's approach to print composition. The figures in the distance add a sense of scale and narrative continuity to the scene. This print serves as a fine example of the intersection between classical literature and visual art in the Dutch Republic, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time.
