A Dutch Golden Age genre painting depicting a quiet farmhouse interior, rendered with atmospheric light and detailed domestic objects.
Egbert Lievensz. van der Poel was a Dutch painter active during the seventeenth century, known for his depictions of rustic interiors and nocturnal scenes. This work, titled Een boerendeel, captures the quiet atmosphere of a farmhouse interior. The composition focuses on the daily activities within a humble dwelling, where a woman sits at a table while a child stands nearby. The surrounding space is filled with domestic objects, including baskets of produce, earthenware pots, and copper vessels, which provide a sense of lived-in authenticity.
The artist employs a restricted palette dominated by earth tones, ochres, and deep browns. This choice of colour reinforces the dim, atmospheric quality of the interior, where light enters from a single source to illuminate specific areas of the room. The contrast between the shadowed corners and the illuminated foreground creates a sense of depth and focus on the still-life elements arranged on the floor. Van der Poel demonstrates a keen observation of texture, from the rough wooden beams of the ceiling to the smooth surfaces of the pottery.
Such genre paintings were popular in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century, reflecting an interest in the everyday lives of ordinary people. Unlike the grand historical or religious subjects favoured in other parts of Europe, these works brought the domestic sphere into the realm of fine art. The inclusion of a cat in the lower left corner and the scattered items suggest a moment captured in time, rather than a posed or formal arrangement. This print offers a view into the material culture of the period, presenting a scene that is both humble and meticulously observed. The work is a characteristic example of the artist's ability to render the quiet dignity of rural life through careful attention to light and shadow.
