A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Dominique Barrière documenting the public festivities in Rome during the 1650 Jubilee.
This etching by Dominique Barrière documents the public festivities held in Rome during the Holy Year of 1650. The composition captures the Piazza Navona, a site of significant urban transformation under the patronage of Pope Innocent X. Barrière, a French artist active in Rome, specialised in recording the architectural developments and ceremonial life of the city. His work provides a precise visual record of the ephemeral structures erected for religious and civic events.
The print depicts the square filled with a dense crowd, gathered around a temporary triumphal arch. The architecture of the surrounding palazzi, including the Palazzo Pamphili, is rendered with careful attention to perspective and detail. The artist employs a fine line technique to delineate the individual figures, the textures of the stone facades, and the atmospheric quality of the Roman sky. Above the scene, a heraldic emblem is suspended, adding a layer of symbolic meaning to the public display.
Barrière often collaborated with other artists and architects to produce plates that functioned as both artistic objects and historical documents. This particular work reflects the Baroque interest in theatricality and the integration of urban space with grand spectacle. The inclusion of a key at the bottom of the print allows the viewer to identify specific buildings and participants, a common feature in seventeenth-century topographical engravings. By capturing this specific moment in the Jubilee year, Barrière preserves the intersection of religious devotion and the evolving urban identity of Rome. The print remains a valuable resource for historians studying the social and architectural history of the seventeenth century, offering a clear view of the city as it appeared during one of its most celebrated periods.
