A classical Renaissance engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicting Bacchus resting beneath a grapevine with a spilled wine vessel.
This engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicts the god Bacchus in a state of repose. The figure sits beneath a grapevine, his hand resting upon his brow in a gesture of weariness or intoxication. Beside him, a vessel spills its contents onto the ground, a detail that reinforces the classical association between the deity and the vine. Mocetto, a Venetian artist active during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, demonstrates a clear interest in the human form and the integration of figures into a wider setting.
The background features a distant architectural structure, likely inspired by the classical ruins or contemporary buildings of the Veneto region. The use of parallel lines for shading, a technique common in early Italian printmaking, creates a sense of volume in the musculature of the figure. The foliage of the vine is rendered with attention to the individual leaves and clusters of grapes, providing a decorative frame for the central subject.
Mocetto was influenced by the work of Andrea Mantegna, particularly in his approach to line and the treatment of classical themes. This print reflects the period's fascination with antiquity, where mythological subjects were frequently revisited through the lens of humanistic study. The composition balances the seated figure with the verticality of the vine and the horizontal expanse of the landscape. The work provides insight into the technical capabilities of Venetian printmakers of the era, who utilised the copper plate to explore narrative and form. This museum-grade print captures the fine details of the original engraving, from the cross-hatching on the figure to the delicate lines defining the distant bridge and buildings.
