A detailed depiction of a ceremonial Gagaku drum by the master artist Shibata Zeshin, showcasing his unique use of lacquer as a painting medium.
Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerwork and painting, bridging the late Edo and early Meiji periods. This work, from the series Lacquer Paintings of Various Subjects, demonstrates his technical command over urushi lacquer as a medium for fine art. The subject depicts a large drum used in Gagaku, the traditional court music of Japan. The instrument is adorned with elaborate dragon motifs and a central tomoe emblem, rendered with precise brushwork that mimics the depth and texture of lacquered surfaces. A performer sits before the drum, positioned on a raised platform that provides a sense of scale and ceremony.
The composition balances the ornate, colourful detail of the drum against a muted, atmospheric background. Zeshin employs a minimalist approach to the surrounding space, using soft washes to suggest the presence of pine trees. This contrast directs the viewer to the ceremonial object, which is the focus of the piece. The artist's ability to manipulate lacquer, a material typically reserved for decorative objects, into a medium for pictorial representation is a hallmark of his career. His work reflects a period of transition in Japanese art, where traditional techniques were adapted to meet new aesthetic demands. The inclusion of the artist's seal at the bottom left confirms the authenticity of this piece, which remains a fine example of his late-career output. The print captures the subtle sheen and tactile quality of the original lacquer, preserving the delicate balance between the bold patterns of the drum and the quiet, restrained environment.
