A fine etching by François Vivares after a drawing by Nicolaes Berchem, depicting a group of sheep and a lamb in a pastoral setting.
This etching, titled Drie schapen en een lam, demonstrates the technical precision of François Vivares, a French engraver who spent much of his career in London. The work depicts a small group of sheep and a resting lamb in a sparse, open field. The composition is balanced, with the animals arranged to occupy the foreground while leaving the background largely empty, a common practice in eighteenth-century pastoral printmaking.
The print bears the inscription 'Berghem delin', indicating that Vivares based this etching on a drawing by the Dutch Golden Age painter Nicolaes Berchem. Berchem was well known for his depictions of livestock and pastoral scenes, and his influence is visible in the naturalistic rendering of the animals' wool and their varied postures. Vivares employs fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the fleece and the contours of the animals, using cross-hatching to suggest shadow and volume without overwhelming the paper surface.
As a printmaker, Vivares was highly regarded for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings and drawings into the medium of etching. This work reflects the period's interest in pastoral themes, which often sought to capture a sense of rural simplicity. The lack of complex background detail focuses the viewer's attention entirely on the anatomical study of the sheep. The print serves as a clear example of the collaborative nature of eighteenth-century print production, where engravers frequently reproduced the works of earlier masters to make them accessible to a wider audience of collectors and art enthusiasts.
