A detailed woodblock print depicting the cultural exchange in a Yokohama trading house during the 1860s, featuring Western and Japanese figures.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide captures the cultural intersection occurring in mid-nineteenth-century Japan. Following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859, artists began documenting the arrival of Westerners and their customs. This genre, known as Yokohama-e, often depicts the curiosity surrounding foreign technology, fashion, and domestic life.
The composition presents a hybrid interior. Large, grid-paned windows reveal a harbour scene filled with Western-style sailing ships, grounding the setting in the specific geography of the treaty port. Inside, the figures represent a blend of identities. Western women in crinoline dresses play musical instruments, while Japanese women in traditional kimono move through the space, one carrying a tray of refreshments. A man in a dark, Western-style coat stands to the right, holding a bottle. The juxtaposition of these figures suggests a social environment where cultural boundaries were fluid.
Sadahide uses a clear, linear style typical of the Utagawa school. The palette relies on flat areas of colour, with the deep blue of the curtains and the green of the floor providing a structured frame for the figures. The print serves as a visual record of the rapid modernisation and international contact that defined the Bakumatsu period. It documents the material culture of the time, from the specific silhouettes of the Western garments to the architectural details of the foreign trading houses. By placing these figures together, the artist provides a narrative of the era, reflecting the fascination with the new arrivals who had begun to alter the social fabric of the port city.
