The narrative moment captures the protagonist in a state of delusion, attacking the puppet theatre of Maese Pedro. Saint-Aubin, a member of a prominent family of French engravers, demonstrates his technical precision through the varied line work used to define the heavy drapery, the splintering wooden structure of the theatre, and the expressive postures of the onlookers.
The composition is organised to draw the eye toward the central conflict. Don Quixote, sword drawn, occupies the middle ground, his form contrasted against the dark, theatrical curtains.
