A sombre Dutch Golden Age still life by Christoffel Puytlinck, depicting two roosters with dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and realistic textures.
Christoffel Puytlinck, a Dutch painter active during the seventeenth century, specialised in the genre of still life, particularly focusing on hunting trophies and game. This composition, titled Dode hanen, displays the characteristic dark, moody aesthetic favoured by artists of the Dutch Golden Age. The work depicts two roosters, one suspended by its feet and the other resting upon a surface, rendered with a focus on the texture of feathers and the anatomical form of the birds.
The lighting is dramatic, emerging from a single source to illuminate the golden-brown plumage of the birds while casting the background into deep shadow. This technique, known as chiaroscuro, directs the viewer's attention to the physical reality of the subjects. The contrast between the bright red combs of the roosters and the muted, earthy tones of the surrounding space creates a sense of weight and presence. Puytlinck demonstrates a technical proficiency in capturing the tactile qualities of the subjects, from the soft down of the underbelly to the stiff, dark quills of the wings.
Still life paintings of this era often functioned as memento mori, reminding the viewer of the transient nature of life. While the primary purpose of such works was the display of technical skill in rendering natural forms, the subject of dead game carries inherent connotations of mortality and the cycle of nature. The composition is balanced, with the vertical orientation of the hanging bird providing a counterpoint to the horizontal placement of the second rooster. This print captures the sombre mood and precise observation typical of Puytlinck's output, offering a window into the artistic preoccupations of the late seventeenth-century Netherlands.
