A sombre historical painting by Bertalan Székely depicting the discovery of King Louis II after the Battle of Mohács.
Bertalan Székely, a prominent figure in 19th-century Hungarian art, produced this work in 1860. It depicts the aftermath of the Battle of Mohács in 1526, a moment of significant national trauma for Hungary. The composition focuses on the discovery of the fallen King Louis II, whose death marked the end of the Jagiellonian dynasty in Hungary and the beginning of Ottoman occupation.
Székely employs a sombre, muted palette to convey the gravity of the scene. The figures are arranged in a tight, emotive group around the monarch, whose body is partially shrouded in white cloth. The surrounding terrain is rendered with earthy tones, suggesting the muddy, desolate conditions of the battlefield. One figure stands tall, removing his hat in a gesture of mourning, while others kneel to inspect the fallen king. The lighting is diffuse, casting a heavy atmosphere over the group and drawing the eye to the central cluster of figures.
As a practitioner of historical painting, Székely sought to capture the emotional weight of national narratives. His approach here avoids excessive theatricality, favouring a grounded, realistic portrayal of grief and loss. The textures of the period clothing, from the heavy cloaks to the metal armour, are rendered with precision, reflecting the artist's academic training. This work remains a notable example of how 19th-century artists engaged with historical memory, using the canvas to reconstruct moments of national crisis. The painting is held in the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery, where it serves as a record of the artist's technical skill and his interest in the tragic episodes of Hungarian history.
