Beskrivning
A 1942 Surrealist oil painting by Roberto Matta, exploring psychological morphology through fluid, cosmic forms and dark, atmospheric space.
Roberto Matta produced Disasters of Mysticism in 1942, a period when he resided in New York after fleeing Europe. This work belongs to his morphological period, where he explored the intersection of human psychology and cosmic space. The composition rejects traditional perspective, opting instead for a fluid, multi-dimensional environment that suggests both microscopic biological structures and vast, interstellar phenomena.
The canvas is dominated by dark, atmospheric voids punctuated by luminous, ethereal forms. These shapes appear to shift and dissolve, creating a sense of constant motion. Matta employed thin, translucent glazes alongside sharper, geometric lines to construct a sense of depth that feels alien yet organic. The interplay between the fiery reds and the cool, ghostly blues creates a tension that draws the viewer into the centre of the frame.
Matta often described his work as psychological morphology, aiming to map the internal states of the mind through visual metaphors. In this piece, the chaotic, swirling energy suggests a breakdown of rational order, aligning with the Surrealist interest in the subconscious and the irrational. The inclusion of precise, drafted lines against the nebulous background provides a contrast between the mechanical and the biological, a recurring theme in his output during the 1940s. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, preserving the layered application that gives the work its sense of depth and movement.
