A refined Qing dynasty album leaf by Zhang Ruoai, featuring bamboo, rocks, and bats on gold-flecked paper.
This work originates from a desk album by the Qing dynasty court painter Zhang Ruoai. The composition features a delicate arrangement of natural motifs, including bamboo, rock formations, and bats, set against a paper background decorated with gold flecks. The artist employs a refined technique, balancing the organic forms of the flora with the symbolic presence of the bats, which in Chinese culture often represent good fortune and longevity.
The use of gold leaf or gold powder scattered across the surface provides a luminous quality to the paper, a common practice in high-status albums intended for scholarly or imperial use. The bamboo is rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, while the rocks exhibit the characteristic textures associated with traditional ink painting. A prominent red seal, containing calligraphic characters, occupies the upper centre of the composition, acting as a formal anchor for the visual elements.
Zhang Ruoai was a member of the literati class and served in the imperial court, where he produced works that adhered to the aesthetic standards of the Qianlong era. His approach to the flower and bird genre reflects a synthesis of traditional brush techniques and the decorative sensibilities favoured by the court. The inclusion of bats, often depicted in groups of five to symbolise the five blessings, suggests a work intended to convey auspicious meaning. The overall composition is balanced, with the negative space allowing the individual elements to remain distinct. This print captures the subtle colour palette and the specific material qualities of the original album leaf, offering a view into the refined artistic output of eighteenth-century China.
