Delta Zeta is a representative example of the mature work of Morris Louis, a central figure in the Washington Color School. Created in 1960, this piece demonstrates the artist's technique of pouring thinned Magna paint onto unprimed canvas. By manipulating the fabric, Louis allowed the pigment to flow across the surface, creating translucent veils of colour that appear to soak into the weave rather than sit upon it.

The composition features two distinct groupings of vertical, ribbon-like bands of colour that frame a large, empty central void. These bands, rendered in shades of yellow, violet, orange, and deep teal, exhibit a fluid, gravity-driven motion. The edges of these forms are soft and blurred, a result of the paint's absorption into the raw cotton duck. This method removes the physical evidence of the artist's brush, shifting the focus entirely to the interaction of hue and the physical properties of the medium.

Louis's approach to the canvas surface rejects the gestural application common in earlier abstract movements. Instead, he prioritises the optical experience of colour. The negative space in the centre of the work acts as a balance to the active, saturated streams at the periphery.
