Delta Theta is a representative work from the final period of Morris Louis, an American painter associated with the Washington Color School. Created in 1961, this piece belongs to the artist's Stripe series. The composition features two distinct groupings of vertical, multi-coloured bands that converge towards the top of the canvas, leaving a large, unpainted expanse of white space in the centre.

Louis achieved this effect by pouring Magna, an acrylic resin paint, directly onto the unprimed canvas. By tilting the support, he allowed the pigment to flow in controlled streams. This technique minimised the presence of the artist's brushwork, allowing the colour to soak into the fabric of the canvas rather than sitting on the surface. The result is a flat, optical experience where the medium and the support become one.

The palette consists of various hues, including yellows, oranges, reds, blues, and greens. These colours appear to cascade downwards, creating a sense of movement despite the static nature of the painting. The white negative space between the two colour formations acts as a structural element, balancing the weight of the pigment-heavy edges.

Louis's approach to painting was a departure from the gestural style of earlier Abstract Expressionists. Instead of focusing on the act of painting as a record of physical movement, he prioritised the properties of colour and the interaction between pigment and canvas. His work is often analysed for its optical clarity and its rejection of traditional pictorial depth. By removing the frame of reference provided by conventional subject matter, Louis invites the viewer to engage directly with the chromatic relationships present on the canvas.
