A detailed 1795 watercolour study of a commemorative monument erected on the Burgerplein in Amsterdam during the Batavian Revolution.
This watercolour and ink study by A. Verkerk documents a temporary monument erected on the Burgerplein in Amsterdam in 1795. The structure, titled 'De Revolutie', was constructed to celebrate the political shifts occurring in the Netherlands during the Batavian Revolution. The drawing captures the neoclassical design of the monument, which features a central pedestal adorned with inscriptions such as 'Nationale Deugd' (National Virtue).
At the summit, an oval medallion depicts a figure seated by the sea, surrounded by flags that represent the new political order. The artist employs a precise, measured hand, typical of architectural and commemorative drawings from the late eighteenth century. The composition is balanced, with the monument serving as the central focus, flanked by simplified representations of trees and the surrounding urban architecture. Two small figures stand to the right, providing a sense of scale to the temporary structure.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft washes of blue, grey, and ochre to define the form and texture of the stone monument. The work functions as a historical record of public art and civic celebration during a period of significant transition in Dutch history. The inclusion of the date '19 juni 1795' at the bottom of the sheet confirms its status as a contemporary observation of the event. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Batavian Republic, where classical motifs were frequently utilised to legitimise and communicate new republican ideals to the public. The drawing remains a valuable document for those interested in the intersection of urban history, political symbolism, and eighteenth-century Dutch graphic art.
