A powerful work by Candido Portinari depicting the harsh realities of the Brazilian drought, rendered with raw, expressive lines and a focus on social themes.
Candido Portinari, a central figure in twentieth-century Brazilian art, produced this work as part of his series focusing on the plight of the retirantes, or migrants fleeing the drought-stricken interior of Brazil. The composition presents a stark, monochromatic study of a deceased child, rendered with expressive, angular lines that emphasise the physical toll of poverty and malnutrition. The skeletal frame of the figure is depicted with a raw, unvarnished honesty, avoiding sentimentality in favour of a direct confrontation with human suffering.
This piece functions as a visual document of social inequality. Portinari employs a technique that combines large-scale, gestural drawing with smaller, inset vignettes. These secondary images provide context, showing groups of figures in states of mourning or displacement. The contrast between the expansive, empty space surrounding the central figure and the dense, busy nature of the smaller scenes creates a sense of isolation. The artist uses a limited palette to focus the viewer on the anatomical reality of the subject, stripping away decorative elements to communicate the severity of the situation.
Portinari was deeply influenced by his own upbringing in a coffee-growing region of São Paulo, and his work frequently returned to the themes of labour, migration, and the harsh realities of rural life. By placing the figure in a void, he removes the subject from a specific time or place, allowing the image to function as a universal representation of loss. The draftsmanship is deliberate, with heavy charcoal-like strokes defining the contours of the body. This print captures the gravity of the original painting, maintaining the tension between the monumental scale of the central figure and the narrative complexity of the smaller, integrated scenes. It is a work that demands quiet observation, reflecting the artist's ability to translate complex social conditions into a singular, haunting image.
