The Ten Largest, No. 10, Old Age is a seminal abstract work by Hilma af Klint, exploring the final stage of the human life cycle through geometric forms and fluid lines.
The Ten Largest, No. 10, Old Age is a significant work from the series created by Hilma af Klint in 1907. This cycle of ten large-scale paintings explores the human life cycle, with this final piece representing the stage of old age. The composition is structured around a central grid of squares, rendered in distinct blocks of blue, red, and yellow. These geometric elements are set against a soft, pale pink background, which is populated by delicate, flowing lines and spiral motifs. Two small, stylised floral forms flank the central grid, adding a decorative quality to the otherwise abstract arrangement.
Af Klint produced these works as part of her spiritual practice, often working in a state of mediumistic trance. Her approach to abstraction predates the more widely recognised movements of the early twentieth century. The use of colour and form in this piece is intentional, reflecting her interest in theosophy and the hidden structures of the natural world. The contrast between the rigid, mathematical grid and the organic, sweeping curves of the background lines suggests a balance between the physical and the metaphysical realms. The work is characterised by a sense of order and completion, fitting for its thematic focus on the final stage of life. The application of tempera creates a matte finish, allowing the colours to appear soft yet clear. This print captures the specific textures and subtle tonal variations of the original, providing a clear view of the artist's unique visual language. It is a piece that invites quiet observation, revealing its layers of meaning through the interplay of geometry and fluid, calligraphic marks.
