A detailed nineteenth-century depiction of the St Jago shipyard on Bickers Eiland, Amsterdam, capturing the industrial activity and maritime architecture of the period.
Pieter Godfried Bertichen, a Dutch painter active during the early nineteenth century, captures the industrial character of Amsterdam in this depiction of the St Jago shipyard. Located on Bickers Eiland, a man-made island in the IJ, the site was a hub of maritime activity. Bertichen documents the physical reality of the shipyard, showing the wooden structures, the timber piles, and the vessels in various stages of repair or construction. The composition is anchored by the large hull of a ship on the right, which draws the eye into the working area of the yard.
Beyond the immediate foreground, the artist includes the domestic architecture of the period, with gabled houses visible behind the dense foliage of trees. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, filled with soft, rolling clouds that suggest a typical Dutch maritime climate. Bertichen employs a precise technique, focusing on the textures of the wood, the rigging of the ships, and the play of light across the water. The scene provides a glimpse into the daily operations of a nineteenth-century shipyard, where manual labour and traditional craftsmanship defined the economic life of the city.
This work belongs to a tradition of Dutch topographical painting that sought to record the changing face of urban and industrial environments. Unlike the more dramatic seascapes of the seventeenth century, Bertichen offers a measured, observational view of his surroundings. The inclusion of small figures engaged in work adds a sense of scale and human presence to the industrial setting. The print captures the monochromatic nuances of the original painting, preserving the tonal balance between the dark, heavy timber of the ships and the lighter, expansive sky. It is a record of a specific location at a specific time, documenting the intersection of urban development and maritime industry in Amsterdam.
