A precise botanical study of a carnation, rendered in watercolour and gouache by Dutch Golden Age master Balthasar van der Ast.
Balthasar van der Ast was a specialist in still-life painting, particularly known for his meticulous depictions of flowers, shells, and insects. This study, titled 'De Poolse Muts' (The Polish Cap), captures a single carnation with scientific precision. The artist employs a delicate application of watercolour and gouache on vellum, a medium favoured during the seventeenth century for its smooth surface, which allows for fine detail and subtle colour transitions.
The carnation is rendered with a focus on the serrated edges of the petals, which are characteristic of the variety. The artist uses a soft palette of pinks and whites, contrasted against the muted green of the stem and calyx. The composition is sparse, placing the flower against a neutral background to direct the viewer's attention to the form and texture of the bloom. The calligraphic inscription at the bottom provides the common name of the flower, a practice common in botanical studies of the period intended for both aesthetic appreciation and scientific record.
Van der Ast was a pupil of Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, and his work reflects the tradition of Dutch floral painting that emerged in the early seventeenth century. These studies were often produced as independent works or as preparatory drawings for larger oil paintings. The clarity of the line and the observation of natural form demonstrate the artist's technical skill. This print reproduces the original vellum surface, maintaining the integrity of the artist's brushwork and the soft, aged quality of the paper. It is a representative example of the botanical art produced during the Dutch Golden Age, where the study of nature was both a pursuit of beauty and an exercise in empirical observation.
