A detailed 1747 pen and ink drawing by Antoon Overlaet, depicting a domestic scene of a woman preparing pancakes for a group of observers.
This work, titled De Pannekoekenbakster, is a pen and ink drawing by the Flemish artist Antoon Overlaet, dated 1747. The composition depicts a domestic interior scene, centred on a woman preparing pancakes over a small hearth. She is surrounded by several figures, including children and adults, who observe the cooking process with interest. The setting is modest, featuring a brick wall, a small window with a lattice frame, and various kitchen implements such as pots and jugs.
Overlaet employs a precise, linear technique to define the forms and textures within the scene. The hatching and cross-hatching provide depth to the figures and the architectural elements, creating a sense of volume despite the monochromatic palette. The artist captures a moment of daily life, typical of the genre traditions that remained popular in the Low Countries during the eighteenth century. The figures are rendered with a focus on their individual expressions and postures, contributing to the narrative quality of the piece.
As a draughtsman based in Antwerp, Overlaet produced works that reflect the stylistic tendencies of his time, balancing observation with a decorative approach to line. The inscription at the bottom, 'Fait à la plume par Anthoine Overlaet à Anvers 1747', confirms the artist, location, and date of production. This drawing provides a glimpse into the domestic habits and social interactions of the period, presented through the lens of a skilled practitioner of the pen. The work is a clear example of the genre studies that circulated among collectors interested in the everyday life of the eighteenth-century populace.
