Armando, born Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, occupies a singular position in post-war Dutch art. His work frequently engages with the trauma of the Second World War, specifically the German occupation of the Netherlands. This piece, De onbekende soldaat, utilises a grainy, high-contrast photographic reproduction of a soldier, stripped of individual identity and context. The image is presented as a stark, monochromatic fragment, forcing the viewer to confront the anonymity of conflict.

Below the central photographic element, Armando introduces a sparse, gestural pencil sketch. This juxtaposition between the mechanical reproduction of the soldier and the fragile, human mark of the artist creates a tension between historical documentation and subjective memory.
