A refined 1808 oil painting by Willem Bartel van der Kooi, capturing a quiet moment as a young boy delivers a sealed letter to a seated woman.
Willem Bartel van der Kooi, a Dutch painter active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, produced this work in 1808. The painting depicts a young boy presenting a sealed letter to a seated woman. The composition follows the conventions of the period, utilising a controlled, studio-like setting with a classical column and draped fabric in the background. The woman wears a high-waisted gown, characteristic of the Empire style popular in European fashion at the time. Her expression is one of quiet contemplation as she receives the correspondence.
Van der Kooi was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture subtle textures, such as the fabric of the woman's dress and the smooth surface of the letter. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the interaction between the two figures, creating a narrative focus on the exchange of the message. The boy, dressed in a dark jacket and trousers, stands in profile, while the woman is positioned to face the viewer, her hand resting gently on her lap. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft creams, muted greens, and deep reds to maintain a sense of balance and order. This work reflects the artist's training and his adherence to the formal qualities of Dutch portraiture during the Napoleonic era. The attention to detail, from the wax seal on the letter to the subtle folds in the drapery, demonstrates the artist's focus on realism and clarity. The painting remains a clear example of the domestic genre scenes that were popular among the Dutch bourgeoisie during this period, offering a glimpse into the social interactions and fashions of the early nineteenth century.
