A nineteenth-century Dutch genre painting depicting a young woman weighing fruit at a market stall, rendered with careful attention to domestic detail.
Henriëtta Christina Temminck, a Dutch painter active during the nineteenth century, produced this genre scene, titled De fruitverkoopster. The work depicts a young woman engaged in the daily commerce of a fruit stall. She stands behind a counter, holding a bunch of grapes in one hand while balancing a set of scales with the other. Her attire, consisting of a white cap, a dark bodice, and a red patterned shawl, reflects the traditional dress often documented in Dutch genre painting of the period.
The composition is arranged to draw the viewer into the stall, where baskets of apples and grapes are displayed. The background is dimly lit, suggesting an interior space, with shelves holding various goods. Temminck employs a controlled use of light to illuminate the central figure, ensuring she remains the focus against the darker surroundings. The texture of the woven baskets and the sheen of the fruit are rendered with attention to detail, characteristic of the academic training common to artists of her era.
This painting aligns with the tradition of Dutch genre scenes that celebrate domestic and commercial life. Temminck captures a moment of quiet industry, avoiding overly dramatic gestures in favour of a realistic, observational approach. The surface of the painting shows signs of age, including a network of craquelure that adds to its historical character. By focusing on the mundane task of weighing fruit, the artist provides a glimpse into the social and economic fabric of the time. The work is a study in light and shadow, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance a complex interior setting with a singular, composed human subject.
