A satirical 17th-century Dutch etching depicting a devil interfering with a woman's spinning, illustrating the idiom for a chaotic situation.
This etching, dated 1652, depicts a satirical scene common in the Dutch Golden Age. Pieter Jansz. Quast, known for his focus on the grotesque and the everyday, presents a woman seated at her spinning wheel, seemingly unaware of the supernatural interference occurring behind her. A small, horned devil figure is shown actively tangling the thread she is working with, while a man stands in the foreground, holding a yarn winder and looking on with a weary, perhaps resigned, expression.
The title, 'Tis al verwart-gaeren', translates to 'It is all tangled yarn', a common Dutch idiom used to describe a chaotic or confused situation. The work functions as a moralising commentary on the frustrations of domestic life and the perceived influence of malevolent forces on mundane tasks. Quast employs a sharp, descriptive line quality to define the figures, using hatching to create volume in the clothing and the devil's form. The composition is staged like a theatrical tableau, with the figures arranged across a shallow, stage-like space.
Quast was a prolific draughtsman and etcher, often choosing subjects that leaned into caricature. His work frequently explored the darker, more absurd side of human behaviour. This print, published by Claes Jansz. Visscher, demonstrates the period's interest in combining moral instruction with humour. The contrast between the mundane act of spinning and the presence of the devil provides a clear visual narrative that would have been immediately recognisable to a seventeenth-century audience. The print remains a curious example of how folklore and daily life were synthesised in Dutch print culture, offering a glimpse into the social anxieties and cultural preoccupations of the era.
