A narrative wood engraving by Moritz von Schwind illustrating the classic fable of the miller, his son, and their donkey.
This wood engraving by Moritz von Schwind depicts the classic Aesop fable of the miller, his son, and their donkey. The composition is divided into a series of vignettes that follow the narrative arc of the story, illustrating the futility of attempting to please everyone. Each panel captures a specific stage of the journey, from the initial decision to walk alongside the animal to the final, absurd spectacle of the pair carrying the donkey on their shoulders to satisfy the mocking crowds.
Schwind, a prominent figure in the Biedermeier period, was known for his ability to blend humour with moral instruction. His draughtsmanship is precise, focusing on the expressive gestures of the figures and the varied reactions of the townspeople they encounter. The work reflects the popular nineteenth-century tradition of the 'Münchener Bilderbogen', a series of illustrated broadsheets that brought art and literature to a wider public. The style is characteristic of the period, featuring clear outlines and a focus on storytelling through sequential imagery. The artist uses the architectural and rural settings to ground the fable in a recognisable, everyday reality, which contrasts with the ridiculous nature of the characters' actions. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the mid-nineteenth century, where moral tales were frequently disseminated through accessible, mass-produced graphic works. The attention to detail in the clothing and the expressions of the onlookers provides a social commentary on the pressures of public opinion, a theme that remains relevant. The work is a fine example of the narrative graphic arts that defined the era, combining technical skill with a keen eye for human folly.
