A detailed 1588 allegorical illustration by Paulus de Kempenaer, combining complex alchemical symbolism with elaborate calligraphic text on parchment.
This work, titled De Alchemie, is a complex allegorical composition by the Flemish artist Paulus de Kempenaer. Produced in 1588, the piece functions as both a visual diagram and a calligraphic manuscript, reflecting the intellectual climate of the late sixteenth century where alchemy, philosophy, and art intersected. The central circular medallion depicts an alchemical furnace, or athanor, attended by a winged putto. This figure, representing the transformative power of the alchemical process, holds a vessel while other figures observe the operation. The scene is populated with symbolic elements, including a small dog, various laboratory glassware, and a figure emerging from a structure, all rendered with a focus on narrative detail rather than strict naturalism.
The upper portion of the parchment is framed by a blue background, accented with decorative scrolls and oval cartouches. The lower half is dominated by an extensive passage of Dutch text written in an elaborate, flourished script. This calligraphy provides a poetic explanation of the alchemical principles depicted above, linking the visual imagery to the written word. The use of parchment as a medium, combined with the application of watercolour, gives the work a tactile quality typical of high-status manuscripts from the period.
De Kempenaer employs a structured, hierarchical composition that guides the viewer from the symbolic imagery of the furnace to the explanatory text below. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the furnace and figures, contrasted against the deep blue of the upper field and the warm, aged tone of the parchment. This print captures the intersection of scientific inquiry and mythological allegory, offering a glimpse into the esoteric traditions of the Renaissance. It is a piece that rewards close inspection, as every flourish of the pen and every figure in the medallion contributes to the overall thematic unity of the work.
