A formal group portrait by Abraham van den Tempel, depicting the Leeuw-Hooft family engaged in musical activities within a refined domestic setting.
This group portrait by Abraham van den Tempel depicts the family of David Leeuw and Cornelia Hooft. Painted in 1671, the work captures the family in a domestic setting, incorporating musical elements that suggest the cultural pursuits of the Dutch merchant class during the seventeenth century. The composition is structured around the parents and their children, with the father positioned behind his wife and offspring. The inclusion of a viol player and a child at the harpsichord indicates the importance of music in the education and social life of the period.
Van den Tempel employs a formal arrangement, typical of high-status portraiture in the Netherlands at the time. The figures are dressed in refined garments, reflecting the prosperity of the sitters. The lighting is controlled, drawing attention to the faces and the musical instruments, while the background features architectural elements and a draped curtain, which add a sense of theatre to the scene. A small dog sits at the feet of the mother, a common inclusion in family portraits to symbolise fidelity. The painting is a clear example of the artist's ability to balance individual likeness with the collective identity of the family unit. The technical execution, particularly in the rendering of the fabric textures and the polished surfaces of the instruments, demonstrates the precision characteristic of Dutch Golden Age painting. This work remains a record of the social aspirations and domestic values held by the elite in Amsterdam during the late seventeenth century.
