This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts the legendary Chinese figure Dashun, one of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety. The narrative centres on the myth of Dashun ploughing a field at Mount Li, where his devotion was so great that birds assisted him in weeding and elephants helped him till the soil. Kuniyoshi captures this scene with a distinct sense of wonder, placing the massive, gentle elephants alongside the small, industrious figure of Dashun.

The composition balances the scale of the animals against the human subject, using a soft, muted palette that reflects the mid-nineteenth-century aesthetic of the Edo period. Kuniyoshi, known for his imaginative approach to historical and legendary subjects, employs clean lines to define the forms of the elephants and the surrounding environment.
