A minimalist ink painting of the monk Bodhidharma by the Japanese literati artist Totoki Baigai, featuring expressive brushwork and traditional calligraphy.
This work depicts Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary monk credited with bringing Chan Buddhism to China, known in Japan as Daruma. Totoki Baigai, a scholar-painter associated with the Bunjinga (literati) tradition, employs a minimalist approach characteristic of Zen-inspired ink wash painting. The figure is rendered with economical, fluid brushwork, focusing on the monk's contemplative posture and weathered features. The composition balances the seated figure on the right with a vertical column of calligraphy on the left, a common arrangement in Japanese hanging scrolls that integrates text and image as a unified aesthetic experience.
Baigai was active during the Edo period, a time when literati painters sought to emulate the expressive freedom of Chinese scholar-artists. His style often prioritises the quality of the brushstroke over strict anatomical accuracy. The ink varies in density, from the dark, saturated lines defining the monk's robe and facial features to the lighter, diluted washes used for the body. The inclusion of calligraphy provides a poetic or philosophical commentary, typical of the period's intellectual culture. The work is presented in a traditional format, with silk borders that frame the paper, maintaining the integrity of the original scroll mounting. This piece reflects the Bunjinga interest in spontaneity and the capture of a subject's inner spirit through minimal visual means.
