Beskrivning
A late-career abstract work by Arshile Gorky, featuring biomorphic forms suspended in a deep, atmospheric field of olive and forest greens.
Arshile Gorky, born Vostanik Manoug Adoian, occupies a unique position within the development of American modernism. His work acts as a bridge between the European Surrealist tradition and the emerging Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. Dark Green Painting, executed in 1948, represents the final phase of his career, a period marked by both personal tragedy and a refinement of his visual language.
The composition is defined by a murky, atmospheric field of deep olive and forest greens. Against this ground, Gorky places biomorphic shapes that suggest organic forms, anatomical fragments, or perhaps botanical memories from his childhood in Armenia. These figures are not static; they appear to float or drift within the space, held together by thin, calligraphic lines that trace their contours. The application of paint varies from thin, translucent washes to more opaque, gestural marks, creating a sense of depth that feels both physical and psychological.
Unlike the aggressive, all-over compositions of his contemporaries, Gorky maintains a degree of spatial ambiguity. The forms do not resolve into recognisable objects, yet they possess a weight and presence that imply a narrative origin. The palette is restrained, relying on the interplay between the dominant green tones and accents of ochre, pale blue, and white. This work demonstrates his ability to synthesise the automatic drawing techniques of the Surrealists with a more deliberate, lyrical approach to colour and form. It is a work that rewards sustained observation, as the relationships between the floating shapes and the surrounding void shift with each viewing. The painting remains a primary example of Gorky's late style, where his technical mastery serves to articulate a complex, internal world.
