Beskrivning
A refined woodcut illustration by Lucien Pissarro, depicting a pastoral scene from the classic tale of Daphnis and Chloe.
This woodcut illustration by Lucien Pissarro depicts a scene from the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. Pissarro, the eldest son of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, moved to London and became a central figure in the private press movement. He founded the Eragny Press in 1894, where he produced books that merged traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities. This particular work reflects his interest in the revival of the woodcut as a medium for fine book production.
The composition shows Chloe washing the back of Daphnis near a stream, surrounded by a flock of goats. The figures are rendered with clean, deliberate lines that define their forms against the textured background of the foliage and animals. Pissarro employs a high-contrast aesthetic, typical of his work for the Eragny Press, where the black ink creates a graphic weight against the cream-coloured paper. The scene draws upon the classical subject matter popularised by the pastoral tradition, yet it is interpreted through the lens of the late nineteenth-century aesthetic movement.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision required for wood engraving, a craft Pissarro mastered to ensure his illustrations harmonised with the typography of his books. The arrangement of the figures and the surrounding nature is balanced, creating a sense of quietude appropriate for the source material. The Eragny Press editions are known for their attention to detail, from the choice of paper to the specific ink formulations used to achieve the desired depth. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative nature of book arts during this period, where the illustrator, printer, and publisher often functioned as a single entity to maintain control over the final aesthetic output.
