Painted in 1912, Dances at the Spring represents a period of intense experimentation for Francis Picabia. During this time, he moved away from traditional representation, adopting the fractured visual language of Cubism to explore movement and rhythm. The composition depicts figures in motion, though their forms are broken into geometric planes that merge with the surrounding space. This approach creates a sense of kinetic energy, where the distinction between the human subjects and their environment becomes secondary to the overall structural arrangement.
The palette is restricted to earthy tones, including ochre, terracotta, and deep brown, which provides a sense of unity across the fragmented surface. By limiting the colour range, Picabia directs attention to the interplay of light and shadow across the angular shapes. The work reflects the influence of the Puteaux Group, a circle of artists who sought to reconcile the analytical rigour of early Cubism with a more lyrical, rhythmic sensibility. This specific approach is often associated with Orphism, a term coined by Guillaume Apollinaire to describe the musical quality of such abstract compositions.
