William James Glackens, a member of the group known as The Eight, produced this work during a period when his style shifted toward the influence of French Impressionism. Her pose suggests a dance, with the fabric of the garment flaring outward to create a sense of lightness and motion against a dark, indistinct background.
Glackens employs a palette dominated by soft, luminous pinks that contrast with the deep, shadowed tones of the setting and the girl's dark stockings. His brushwork is fluid and expressive, prioritising the capture of light and atmosphere over rigid anatomical precision.
