A detailed handscroll depicting a feudal daimyo procession, executed in the characteristic style of the early Hishikawa school.
This handscroll depicts a daimyo procession, a common subject in Edo-period Japanese art. The Hishikawa school, established by Hishikawa Moronobu, was instrumental in the early development of Ukiyo-e. This work captures the movement of a feudal lord and his retinue as they travel toward the capital. The composition is arranged horizontally, allowing the viewer to follow the sequence of figures, horses, and palanquin bearers across the paper surface.
The figures are rendered with clear, controlled outlines and flat areas of colour. This approach is characteristic of the early Ukiyo-e style, which prioritised legible narrative and social observation. The artist pays attention to the varied attire of the attendants, from the simple garments of the porters to the more elaborate clothing of the mounted samurai. The horses are depicted in a stylised manner, consistent with the artistic conventions of the late seventeenth century.
Such scrolls were often produced to document the social hierarchy and the visual spectacle of the sankin-kotai system, where daimyo were required to travel to Edo periodically. The neutral background ensures that the focus remains entirely on the figures and their interactions. The work provides a window into the social customs and aesthetic preferences of the period, demonstrating the school's focus on contemporary life and urban culture. The use of ink and light washes of colour creates a sense of clarity, avoiding unnecessary detail while maintaining a sense of order and purpose within the procession. This piece is a representative example of the narrative traditions that defined the early years of the Ukiyo-e movement, reflecting the artistic output of the Hishikawa workshop during its most active period.
