A Sienese tempera panel depicting the Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John, featuring an upper medallion of the Virgin of the Annunciation.
This work by the Sienese painter Andrea Vanni presents a traditional devotional subject within a pointed, architectural frame. The central panel depicts the Crucifixion, featuring the figure of Christ on the cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. Their postures are restrained, reflecting the solemnity typical of late fourteenth-century Italian religious art. The figures are elongated, a characteristic stylistic choice of the Sienese tradition, which prioritised linear grace over anatomical realism.
Above the main scene, set within a circular medallion in the spandrel, is a depiction of the Virgin of the Annunciation. This inclusion creates a vertical narrative link between the sacrifice of Christ and the moment of the Incarnation. The architectural framing, with its gothic arch and decorative elements, suggests this piece was originally part of a larger polyptych or a private devotional tabernacle. The composition relies on a hierarchical arrangement, where the scale and placement of the figures guide the viewer through the theological narrative.
Vanni was a significant figure in the political and artistic life of Siena, and his work maintains the stylistic continuity of the Sienese school, which remained distinct from the emerging naturalism of Florence. The surface treatment, typical of tempera on panel, allows for a delicate handling of light and shadow, though the passage of time has softened the original clarity of the pigments. The work provides a clear example of the devotional focus of the period, where art functioned as a visual aid for prayer and contemplation. The preservation of the original frame structure offers insight into how such objects were integrated into ecclesiastical or domestic settings during the late Middle Ages.
