Beskrivning
An early Expressionist painting by Max Ernst, featuring a distorted, emotive interpretation of the Crucifixion set against a dark, medieval cityscape.
Painted in 1913, this early work by Max Ernst reflects the influence of German Expressionism before his later transition into Dada and Surrealism. The composition presents a traditional religious subject through a lens of psychological tension and distorted form. The central figure of Christ is elongated, with muscular definition rendered in harsh, unnatural tones that deviate from conventional depictions.
In the foreground, two figures appear in a state of mourning or distress, their postures echoing the angularity of the central cross. The background features a medieval city, its spires and structures rendered with a sense of unease. A red orb, possibly representing a sun or moon, hangs in a dark, turbulent sky, adding to the atmosphere of impending catastrophe. The use of colour is aggressive, with deep reds, blacks, and sickly yellows dominating the palette.
Ernst employs a heavy, deliberate brushwork that emphasises the emotional weight of the scene. The spatial arrangement is compressed, pushing the figures toward the viewer and creating a sense of claustrophobia. This work demonstrates the artist's early interest in the capacity of art to externalise internal states of mind. By reinterpreting a classic iconographic theme, Ernst moves away from academic realism toward a more subjective, emotive visual language. The painting serves as a record of his formative years in the Rhineland, where he engaged with the works of August Macke and the broader Rhenish Expressionist circle. It remains a stark example of how early twentieth-century artists utilised historical motifs to explore modern anxieties and personal turmoil.

Artist Biography
Max Ernst
He was born in Brühl, near Cologne, and studied philosophy and art history at the University of Bonn. He had no formal art training. He saw a Picasso exhibition, joined the Rhineland Expressionists, served in the German army during the First World War (artillery), and emerged with what he described as a compulsion to find something beyond rational thought. Dada gave him the method. Surrealism gave him the framework.
His collage novels, made from cut-up Victorian engravings reassembled into dreamlike narratives, are among the most original works of the twentieth century. Une Semaine de Bonte (A Week of Kindness, 1934) is a series of 182 collages arranged in five chapters, each associated with an element and a day of the week. The imagery is violent, erotic, and funny. The source material, melodramatic Victorian illustrations, is treated with deadpan seriousness.
He married four times. His second wife was Peggy Guggenheim (briefly). His fourth was the painter Dorothea Tanning. He moved to America during the war, lived in Sedona, Arizona, and then returned to France. He died in Paris in 1976, the night before his eighty-fifth birthday.
