A charming eighteenth-century portrait by Daniel Gardner, depicting the young Cropley Ashley-Cooper and his sister with their pet spaniel.
This portrait by Daniel Gardner depicts the young Cropley Ashley-Cooper, who would later become the 6th Earl of Shaftesbury, alongside his sister, Mary Anne Ashley-Cooper. Gardner was a popular portraitist in late eighteenth-century Britain, known for his technical facility with pastel and gouache. This medium allowed him to achieve a soft, atmospheric quality that distinguishes his work from the more rigid oil portraits of his contemporaries.
The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic child portraiture from the period. The siblings are shown in a relaxed, affectionate pose, with Mary Anne seated and Cropley standing beside her, his hand resting gently on her shoulder. A small spaniel looks up at the boy, adding a sense of domestic warmth to the scene. The oval format, a common choice for Gardner, focuses the viewer's attention on the interaction between the two figures. The background features a suggestion of a parkland setting, rendered with loose, expressive strokes that contrast with the more detailed treatment of the children's faces and clothing.
Gardner's use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of soft blues, creams, and earthy tones. The light appears to emanate from the left, illuminating the children and creating subtle shadows that define their forms. This work captures the informality and charm often sought by the British gentry in their family commissions. The artist's ability to render the textures of the children's garments, from the fine fabric of the girl's dress to the structured coat worn by the boy, demonstrates his skill in capturing the material culture of the era. This print offers a clear view of Gardner's technique, preserving the delicate application of pigment that defines his original work.
