A satirical 1857 lithograph by Félicien Rops, mocking mid-nineteenth-century fashion trends by depicting magistrates wearing crinolines.
This lithograph by the Belgian artist Félicien Rops belongs to his satirical series titled Crinolinographies. Produced in 1857, the work mocks the fashion trends of the mid-nineteenth century, specifically the crinoline, by imagining its application to the formal attire of the judiciary. Rops depicts two legal figures, their traditional robes absurdly expanded by the voluminous structure of the crinoline, creating a visual juxtaposition between the gravity of the courtroom and the frivolity of contemporary dress.
The composition is typical of Rops's early work as a caricaturist. He employs a sharp, observational eye to capture the absurdity of the scene. The figures stand before a backdrop marked with the text 'COUR D'ASS', grounding the satire in a recognisable institutional setting. The artist uses lithographic techniques to render the heavy fabric of the robes, contrasting the dark, dense ink of the garments against the lighter, sketch-like background. The inclusion of a single shoe discarded on the floor adds a touch of narrative chaos to the otherwise rigid environment.
Rops was a prolific printmaker and illustrator, known for his biting social commentary and technical skill. This piece reflects the mid-century preoccupation with the crinoline, a garment that dominated women's fashion and became a frequent subject for social critics and cartoonists of the period. By placing this fashion item on male magistrates, Rops subverts gendered expectations and highlights the ridiculous nature of the trend. The print remains a clear example of the satirical print culture that flourished in Europe during the nineteenth century, where artists used their medium to critique social norms and institutional pomposity. The work is a fine specimen of Rops's ability to blend technical precision with a cynical, humorous perspective on the society of his time.
