A detailed etching by Antonio Fantuzzi depicting an ornate, Mannerist-style covered cup decorated with mythological figures and grape festoons.
This etching by Antonio Fantuzzi depicts a highly decorative covered cup, a form often associated with the Mannerist aesthetic prevalent at the French court of Fontainebleau. Fantuzzi, an Italian artist who relocated to France, produced numerous prints documenting the ornamental designs and sculptural works created for King Francis I. His work reflects the stylistic transition from the High Renaissance toward the elongated, elegant proportions characteristic of the Mannerist period.
The vessel itself is a study in excess and classical allusion. The base is supported by three figures, likely satyrs or mythological beings, whose forms merge into the structure of the cup. The bowl is adorned with a heavy festoon of grapevines and clusters of fruit, interspersed with lion masks that hold ring handles. Above the lid, a reclining pair of figures frames a central circular element, creating a balanced yet complex silhouette. The etching technique allows for precise rendering of the musculature and the textures of the foliage, demonstrating the technical skill required to translate three-dimensional metalwork into a two-dimensional print.
Such designs were not necessarily intended for actual manufacture, but rather functioned as visual records or pattern books for goldsmiths and other artisans. The composition prioritises the display of human anatomy alongside naturalistic motifs, a hallmark of the decorative arts during the mid-sixteenth century. The print captures the spirit of courtly luxury, where the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and functional objects were frequently blurred. This piece provides a clear view into the artistic exchange between Italy and France during the Renaissance, showing how classical themes were adapted to suit the tastes of the French monarchy.
