A sophisticated Ukiyo-e hanging scroll depicting two courtesans in a playful parody of the Zen poets Kanzan and Jittoku.
This hanging scroll by Kinpūsha Toyomaro presents a classic example of mitate-e, a genre of Japanese art that reinterprets historical or religious themes through the lens of contemporary Edo-period life. Here, the artist replaces the traditional figures of Kanzan and Jittoku, two eccentric Zen Buddhist poets often depicted with a scroll and a broom, with two elegant courtesans. The parody relies on visual cues: the standing woman holds a broom, while her seated companion gestures toward a scroll, mimicking the iconic poses of the legendary sages.
The composition is spare, allowing the figures to occupy the negative space of the silk background. The artist employs a refined line quality to define the elaborate folds of the kimonos and the delicate features of the women. The standing figure wears a green outer robe with a subtle pattern, while the seated figure is dressed in a more complex ensemble featuring a dark, peacock-feather-patterned garment over a red patterned kimono. The use of colour is restrained, focusing attention on the textures of the textiles and the graceful postures of the subjects.
Kinpūsha Toyomaro, a follower of the Utamaro style, captures the refined aesthetic of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The work functions as a sophisticated visual joke, inviting the viewer to recognise the juxtaposition between the ascetic, spiritual nature of the original Zen figures and the worldly, fashionable status of the courtesans. The surrounding border, decorated with bamboo and floral motifs, provides a structured frame for the central scene. This print captures the wit and technical precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century Japanese print culture, where the boundaries between high art and popular entertainment were frequently blurred.
