A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kaigetsudō Dohan, featuring a standing courtesan holding a poetry card, rendered in bold black ink.
This woodblock print by Kaigetsudō Dohan depicts a standing courtesan, a subject central to the Kaigetsudō school of Ukiyo-e artists. The school is known for its focus on the bijin-ga genre, which translates to pictures of beautiful women. Dohan, like other members of this group, employs a bold, calligraphic line to define the figure. The composition emphasises the volume and movement of the subject's kimono, which is decorated with patterns of pine trees and bridges. These motifs are often associated with New Year celebrations in Edo-period Japan.
The print is a sumizuri-e, meaning it is printed entirely in black ink. This technique relies on the strength of the line work and the balance of negative space rather than colour to create visual impact. The courtesan holds a tanzaku, a narrow strip of paper used for writing poetry, which suggests a moment of quiet reflection during the festivities. The figure occupies the vertical space of the paper with a sense of presence, her posture slightly turned to reveal the layers of her elaborate attire.
Kaigetsudō Dohan was active during the early 18th century. His work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the urban merchant class in Edo. The focus remains on the fashion and the graceful carriage of the courtesan. The signature and seal of the artist are visible on the right side of the print, identifying the work as a product of the Kaigetsudō studio. This print provides a clear example of the stylistic consistency maintained by the school, where the emphasis is placed on the rhythmic quality of the drapery and the stylised features of the subject.
