A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, depicting the courtesan Usugumo in an elaborate kimono with traditional calligraphy.
This surimono print by Yashima Gakutei depicts the courtesan Usugumo, a figure often associated with the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo-period Japan. Gakutei, a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, was a master of the surimono format. These prints were privately commissioned, often for poetry circles, and utilised high-quality paper and expensive pigments.
The composition focuses on the figure of the courtesan, who is dressed in an elaborate kimono featuring circular motifs and geometric patterns. Her hair is styled with numerous ornamental pins, a hallmark of high-ranking courtesans of the era. She holds a folding fan decorated with a delicate floral design, which balances the weight of her heavy robes. The background is subtle, allowing the calligraphic text to integrate with the visual elements of the print.
Gakutei employs a refined line quality, characteristic of the surimono tradition, where the focus is on technical precision and aesthetic harmony. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones, deep reds, and greens to create a sense of balance. The inclusion of poetry alongside the figure suggests that this work was intended for an audience that appreciated the intersection of visual art and literature.
Surimono prints were produced in limited numbers, making them distinct from the mass-produced commercial prints of the time. This piece reflects the cultural climate of the early 19th century, where the lives of courtesans were subjects of fascination and artistic exploration. The print remains a clear example of the technical capabilities of woodblock printing during the Edo period, demonstrating the use of embossing and metallic pigments that were common in such luxury items.
